The speakers comprised of a diversed group of women in different fields of the fine arts including ballet, music composition and classical indian dances.

This is an image of Harry Shum Jr. who was on the People Magazine as being one of People’s “Sexiest Men Alive”. This image can be interpreted in multiple ways. One thing is it is a great thing that People Magazine (a mainstream magazine) are publishing images of “people” asian americans can look up to and see that there are famous people like them in magazine covers. Moreover, this magazine cover emphasizes that beauty and sex appeal in this case male sexuality and physical attractiveness can come through multiple colors and racial/ethnicities. It could also represent the public’s fascination with the “exotic” characteristics of Harry’s asuab body and skin based on the fact that he’s on Glee. However, this may be interpreted as a repetition of stating there are only certain roles that Asian Americans can play in the media. In this case, Harry plays Mike Chang on Glee whose character started to be more in the limelight in this third season. He plays this character who has strict Asian parents and who only dates a fellow Asian girl, Tina and gets a bad rep from his father because he got an A- (Asian F!) on his chemistry exam where his father forced him to drop glee club and dancing to study and make sure he gets into Stanford. In other words, People may be rewarding Harry for reprising a role young Asian Americans should become/expected in either real life or tv as a study hard guy with strict parents. Granted, in the end of Glee, Harry’s character, Mike ends up standing up to his father stating that he wants to pursue his career in dancing and stars in his school’s musical.

Joanne Chang - An AAPI woman I respect

Joanne Chang is an restaurant owner/chef/baker based in Boston. She owns Flour Bakery which makes amazing tasty pastries and sandwiches. She also owns Myers and Chang restaurant, which is an asian fusion restaurant. She went to Harvard and majored in mathematics. What earned her my respect and admiration, was she did not pursue the career that was expectant of AAPI citizens (engineers, doctors etc.). Joanne decided to pursue her passion for baking and cooking and opened up her own bake shops and later restaurants and became her own business entreprenuer. She was on the food network show, Throw Down with Bobby Flay where she explained how she developed a mathematic equation to put the right amount of stickiness in a sticky bun. Later on the show, Joanne totally beat Bobby Flay in creating the best sticky bun which made her respect her more!

2011 was a crazy year but then I say that every year.

2011

1. I finished my first year of grad school and started my second year as a Masters in Public Policy student

2. I had my two first “real world” jobs (internships) with two wonderful organizations United Way and Massachusetts Advocates standing strong

3. Had to deal with a crazy psycho roommate (who fortunately moved out!)

4. Traveled to other states like Rhode Island and Conneticuit and got to visit the Mark Twain house and the Harriet Beecher Stowe house as well as Yale and Brown and the National Coast Guard Academy

5. Got a new phone after spilling the old one with hot chocolate and a new laptop after the old one told me it was time for it to go bye bye!

2012 will be about me actually finishing things and Improving my lifestyle

1. Finishing up my masters degree and finishing school as a whole and fully enter the real world

2. Finish up reading some books that I’ve started but never completed and finishing James Patterson Women’s Murder Club series (depending on how long the series James decides it to be)

3. Finish up a story I’m writing

4. Be more organized (probably say that every year)

5. Be my own better domestic goddess (with the help of nigella and giada and jamie)
